So much of our experience within the metaverse is shaped by a combination of what you see and how you feel—colors, lighting, and the overall aesthetic play a big role in both. In the spirit of coming together and unification, the Horizon OS Art Team explored the use of color and motion across mixed reality design.
As part of RLDS (Reality Labs Design System) principles, the team applied the idea of a unified “color language” to not only reinforce the Meta brand but also evoke emotional connection across different areas of the product experience.

What does a color language look like in practice? For new users, this means creating a warm and inviting space, giving them the confidence to explore the platform. To achieve this we use subtle design choices in color, materiality qualities, unique motion behaviors, and tone to emotionally connect users with these experiences.
To create joy and delight, we've leveraged Avatar's glows in the system UI and added an expressive gradient shimmer to immersive spaces. We’re not just talking about moving backgrounds, we’re creating spaces that are alive and breathing by leveraging choreography in our environments, bringing us closer to a familiar reality.
These updates are aligned with further developments in the user experience around Horizon OS — Spaces, People, Apps/Augments, and Navigation.
